Silicon Valley Community Foundation

Silicon Valley Community Foundation serves all of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and is a leading voice and catalyst for innovative solutions to the region's most challenging problems.

Through the Community Leadership Project, Silicon Valley Community Foundation is providing support to build the sustainability of small and mid-size organizations serving low-income people and communities of color. The following video provides an example of the work being done by one such organization, the Multicultural Institute.

Region Served: Greater San Francisco Bay Area
San Mateo and Santa Clara counties

Award:
Phase 1 (2009-2012): $1 million
Phase 2 (current): $1 million

Program Details:
During Phase 1, Silicon Valley Community Foundation made grants to 11 organizations over three years. These grants averaged $10,000 to $12,000 per year for core operating funds, plus up to $10,000 in capacity-building support. Grantees completed organizational assessments to determine their priorities, and co-designed learning community meeting agendas with the foundation.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation matched grantees with consultants on capacity-building projects that targeted issues identified in the organizational assessments, such as executive coaching and communications.

In Phase 2, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation will build on its Phase 1 work with 10 organizations that have the potential to grow. It will provide several years of core operating support and grant funds for capacity-building projects. Grantees will be given organizational assessments, will be connected to a larger network of nonprofits in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and will participate in a peer learning cohort that will increase grantees’:
